Papers of Henry Willard Williams, 1822-1897 (inclusive).

Contains mostly personal letters from Williams to his sister describing medical studies in Paris from 1846 to 1848, political and social events during the period, medical issues such as use of ether, and travels throughout Europe. Letters to Williams from various colleagues comment on his publications and medical topics, or are of a more routine nature, pertaining to memberships, invitations to the Harvard Medical School celebrations, etc. Papers also include letters of sympathy and a resolution upon the death of Williams; personal documents such as appointments, certificates, passport, and admission cards; annual licenses, 1862-1867; report, 1862, about unsuitability of a site for a hospital in Boston; and notes and clippings.

Williams (Harvard, M.D. 1849) served as a visiting district physician and later as surgeon to the Boston Dispensary, and he taught at the Boylston Medical School, 1850-1855. In 1850 he organized a class of Harvard medical students for instruction in diseases of the eye and became a professor at Harvard in 1871. Williams was one of the first among ophthalmic surgeons to use etherization as a general practice in cataract extraction, and also initiated a reform in ophthalmic therapeutics. ...
